Packard-Academy-TechTip-Header

While our customers are wholesalers, Packard knows that you, the contractor, have a choice. You are often presented with many buying options, and being well-informed about your purchase can help make your job easier and more successful.  Our Tech Tips are also very helpful for our wholesalers as we present product information that can help as contractors have questions.

This is why we have dedicated a section of our site for contractors and wholesalers. In this section, you will find helpful product tips, tools and some clips from our training classes. We’ve also provided a distributor locator so you can find the nearest wholesaler who can give you access to Packard products.

Replacing a Draft Inducer.

by User Not Found

If the replacement draft inducer is the same RPM, horsepower, and amps as the original, it is a suitable replacement, correct?

That may be enough information when replacing a condenser fan or evaporator blower motor, but that is not nearly enough information when selecting a replacement draft inducer.  The design of the blower housing, the dimensions of the impeller, the location of the impeller within the housing, the dimensions of the pressure tap, the location of the pressure tap, any special characteristics of the inlet and outlet are just some of the things that influence performance.  Some draft inducers may look similar, but performance could be substantially different.  This difference in performance could prove deadly if the result is excessive carbon monoxide levels.  Even though there are numerous safety features in gas furnaces that help protect the consumer from malfunctions that could result in deadly levels of carbon monoxide,  the technician should never risk replacing a draft inducer with one that is not designated as a suitable replacement.  Always use a good cross reference to match the replacement to the original.

Only licensed professional technicians should install draft inducers.  After installing properly, a combustion analyzer should be used to determine that proper combustion is occurring.  The flue should be checked for proper draft.  The technician should also measure levels of carbon monoxide to assure that they are safe.

The proper replacement draft inducer must be installed properly, combustion characteristics checked, and carbon monoxide levels measured to assure inhabitant safety.
